Summary Information

This project installed traffic surveillance equipment, variable message signs (VMSs) and associated communications infrastructure on Interstate 82/US-395 just north of Umatilla, Oregon, and a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera at the State Road 14/I-82 interchange, at a cost of approximately $358,000.

The system provides information to travelers in regards to road closures due to high winds, allows the Washington State Patrol (WSP) to ensure the road has been cleared before allowing nuclear waste to be transported, is used to divert traffic between I-82 and SR 221, and displays Amber Alerts on the variable message signs.
