Evaluating crash avoidance countermeasures using data from FMCS's/NHTSA's large truck accident causation study

Summary Information

This study used real-world crash data to estimate the size of crash populations that could benefit from crash avoidance countermeasures. Using investigative information from 1070 crashes examined during the 2001 to 2003 Large Truck Crash Causation Study (LTCCS) researchers identified a discrete set of crash scenarios where countermeasures may be applicable. The study focused on crashes involving large trucks where a significant number of injuries and fatalities could be avoided.

The LTCCS data were collected at 24 representative locations across the United States. Analysis of these data indicated that 80 to 90 percent of recorded crashes were associated with driver related factors or driver error. Countermeasures were estimated to have helped or prevented 52 percent of truck versus light vehicle crashes and 70 percent of truck versus non-motorist crashes. These target populations provided the information needed to calculate system effectiveness.

FINDINGS

The following data listed in Table 3 of the source report and drawn from the LTCCS Analysis Report (Kingsley 2009) ranked ITS countermeasures by their potential to prevent crashes.
