Summary Information

This article contains a brief summary of experience with red light camera enforcement systems. The author cites an example in Victoria, Australia where the implementation of an automated red light enforcement system resulted in a documented 32 percent reduction in right-angle collisions. In Howard County, Maryland, an intersection experienced 15 collisions during the year prior to implementation of a red light camera and 8 collisions in the year following the installation. While the Maryland result was recorded too soon after implementation to be statistically significant, the indications are that the system has had a positive impact on safety at the intersection. Driver behavior has changed significantly at all intersections in Howard County where the cameras have been installed. The red light violation rate has dropped approximately 53 percent across all of the sites.
