Summary Information

Beginning in 1994, Fairfax County, Prince William County, and Louden County in the Commonwealth of Virginia deployed a system to connect approximately 700 signalized intersections to a central control system using leased telephone lines. In the control room, operators attempted to effectively manage the arterial transportation network by optimizing signal timings to improve traffic progression and reduce environmental impacts.


In May 1999, optimization of signal timing at 40 intersections was completed in the Tysons Corner area of Virginia. Estimates indicated the system reduced fuel consumption by approximately nine percent decreasing annual emissions by approximately 134,600 kilograms.
