For more than seven months, people who have run red lights in Fairfax City have also run the risk of being detected by automatic cameras that record cars' rear license plates. Police say the program is responsible for decreasing the number of accidents throughout the city.

In November 1998, 28 accidents occurred at intersections with traffic lights compared with 43 in the same month of 1996.
