The cost to implement SmartPark systems can range from $2,000 to $30,000 per space depending on technology, location, level of cooperation among public and private entities, and deployment strategy.

This report examined the potential of a nationwide deployment of a SmartPark system designed to help truck drivers find a safe and available parking. SmartPark systems work by collecting real-time information about nearby parking availability and communicating it in real-time.

Parking data collected from parking facilities is sent to an information processing center and then converted into parking availability information, which is then disseminated via different media to drivers via roadside dynamic message signs (DMS), websites applications, and mobile devices.

The diagram below excerpted from the source report highlights three main components of a SmartPark system.

Cost per space gives context and supports comparison between different States’ solutions within the MAASTO framework and was calculated by dividing the "Deployment Total" by the sum of the public and private spaces.

The State of Kentucky achieved the lowest cost per space at approximately $2,107 per space. The most expensive State was Kansas at $30,429 per space. Factors influencing costs include technology, location, number of parties, incorporation of private entities, and deployment strategy.
