An Optimization Model for Eco-Driving at Signalized Intersection

Summary Information

This research used the EPA Motor Vehicle Emissions Simulator (MOVES) and a genetic algorithm to estimate the potential benefits of implementing eco-driving controls at a signalized intersection designed to detect traffic conditions, modify signal phasing, and communicate with drivers to optimize speed profiles and smooth traffic flow to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, and limit intersection delay. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to analyze and compare performance using a variety of speed trajectories to get a range of impacts on emissions (Nitrogen oxide) and travel time.

FINDINGS

The results of the case study indicated that eco-driving can reduce emissions by more than 50 percent and reduce travel time by about seven percent compared to a normal driving strategy.
