MnDOT and the University of Minnesota truck parking availability demonstration project.
Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States
Summary Information
MnDOT and the University of Minnesota developed an automated truck stop management system to determine the number of occupied parking spaces at MnDOT safety rest areas and commercial truck stops and notify truckers in real-time of parking availability as they approached rest areas. The system was designed to use a network of cameras to monitor parking availability at a truck stop, automatically identifying available spaces in real time, and then broadcast available parking information via a website, in-cab messaging, and a variable message sign located a few miles upstream of the facility located on Interstate 94 (I-94).
SYSTEM COST
Based on available system cost data for dynamic message signs and entrance/exit ramp meters used to detect and count vehicles, the total estimated cost to equip one rest area ranged from $70,000 to $120,000.
